Hall of Heroes: Those who
inspire us at Eldred Central School.
Our social studies team will be nominating a hero to
celebrate for each quarter of the school year. That individual will take
center stage in our classrooms and our lives during that quarter.
Look below for links and information to find out more
about our hero of the quarter.
Cesar Chavez
| Chavez is regarded as one of the
most important people in the U.S. labor movement. He grew up in a
migrant family and dropped out of school after 7th grade. He served
in the US navy during WWII and then returned to migrant farming.
Chavez went on to organize farm workers into what became the United
Farm Workers, AFL-CIO, advocating non-violence and campaigning for
voter registration. In 1965 he organized a nationwide strike
boycotting grapes, lettuce, and protesting the use of pesticides.
Chavez organized over 100,000 workers, resulting in major
improvements for farm workers, including secret ballots for union,
improved housing, health benefits and wages. |
